DESCRIPTION:The modern world is ever more dependent on computer science an
d information technology advances. Especially in life science in recent ye
ars\, explosive amounts of biological information have been obtained and d
eposited in various databases. The predominant source of this data is “h
igh-throughput” experimentation\, involving simultaneous execution of hu
ndreds or thousands of experiments. A comprehensive understanding of biolo
gical phenomena can be achieved only through the integration of all availa
ble biological information and different data analysis tools and applicati
ons. It becomes crucial for modern scientists to acquire skills that will
enable to deal with this data explosion. It is not surprising that scienti
sts with strong computer skills fare better in their position and research
. This course aims to provide learners with the basic notions underlying c
omputer science. The focus of this course in on computer architecture\, sc
ientific computing and basic programming.\n\nAim of the course:\n\nTo prov
ide participants with basic knowledge on computer architecture and availab
le resources\, programming in MATLAB\, and good IT practices.\n\nBy the en
d of the course\, the participants should be able to:\n\n\n	Describe perso
nal computer & cluster architecture and their usage.\n	Describe the main o
perational systems & programming languages\n	Write basic scripts and funct
ions in MATLAB\n	Describe some principles of good programming practice\n	N
ame the available IT resources and people in charge at the GIGA/ULiège\n\
n\nTarget group: PhD candidates. Course is limited to 15 participants\n\nP
rerequisites: Working knowledge of English\; personal laptop\; preferably
with MATLAB pre-installed\, or it will be installed on Day 1.\n\nDuration
of the course and workload: 5 days\; 38 hours \n\nOrganization of the cour
se: \n\nExcept for Day 1\, each morning is spent discussing the material s
tudied and exercises solved the previous afternoon. A one hour of lecture
on a specific topic is also scheduled. In the afternoon\, attendees will b
e expected to follow MOOC videos (MATLAB and Octave for Beginners\, edX pl
atform) and read a few chapters from a MATLAB book. Then they will try and
solve some problems by writing MATLAB code in pairs.\n\nSupport resources
:\n\nMOOC: MATLAB and Octave for Beginners \nThis will be the main MOOC
about MATLAB programming. The whole pdf book for the course (chapters to r
ead and exercices) will be made available or it can be purchased on Amazo
 n.\n\nAdditional resources\n\n\n	MOOC: IT support: Hardware essentials\n
MOOC: Introduction to Linux\n	MOOC: Data Science: Productivity tools\n\n
